Caveat in repairing diaphragm shutters
- Work in a closed workbench or at least work on a tea tray. If the small parts drop on the floor, they can unlikely be found again.
- Keep the shutter in release state before open the shutter to expose the gear and mechanism.
- Dont tension or fire the shutter and keep the shutter laying on the workbench.
- Watch out for the small loosy parts with magnifying glass. Typical loosy parts are ring bearing around the speed control pin in the speed governer, ball bearing and its underneath coil spring for the clicking feel when setting the shutter speed. If the shutter is fired, the ring bearing will lose and is difficult to find a replacement
- Watch out for plastic parts in case the cleaning solvent is unfriendly to plastic.
- When re-assembling, avoid pressing too hard on plastics part e.g. the plastic ring for the flash sync contact.
- There may be some windows under the gears exposing the diaphragm and avoid dropping any lubricating oil on them.
- Use waist watch lubricating oil and not WD40 and use the waist watch oil applier
